A Summer of Love
The Half Moon Bay Shakespeare Company, now entering its eighth season, will
present Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy, “As You Like It,” August 16 through
September 8 in John L. Carter Park, Half Moon Bay. The company will perform
the play with a groovy twist by setting the action in San Francisco’s, Summer of
Love and other Bay Area locations. If you’re old enough to remember love-ins, girl
groups, bell bottoms and hippies, this production will surely have you flashing
back to the sixties.
Directed by Robert Pickett, HMB Shakespeare’s artistic director, the play will
feature music and dancing from the era, with choreography by Hayley Thirlwall,
costumes by Lisa Claybaugh, musical direction by Louis Lagalante and lighting
design by Steven Forth. Actors from all over the Bay Area will begin rehearsing
July 7 in Half Moon Bay with many bringing to the show not only Shakespearean
experience, but also musical theatre backgrounds.
Carter Park is in the center of downtown Half Moon Bay and will soon be
undergoing dramatic changes, as the City has plans to increase the seating capacity
and install a permanent stage that can be utilized by other performing arts groups
and musicians. HMB Shakespeare Company adopted the park six years ago, and its
members have long dreamed of the changes that are planned to begin next year. A
natural amphitheatre, the park lends itself to an idyllic setting for pre-show picnics.
Be sure to dress warmly for evening performances, remember your sun screen for
the afternoon matinees and don’t forget to wear some flowers in your hair!
Tickets are available online at and at Coastside Books, 432
Main Street, downtown Half Moon Bay and at the door.
